flag irises

Lake Charles, LA

I've seen yellow and blue flag irises. Are there any other colors?

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Normally what people refer to as flag irises are only blue and yellow. In your area, flag irises are usually Louisianas, and of course, Louisianas come in gorgeous colors. In other parts of the country flag irises are versicolor, or virginica, which are blue, or the Iris pseudacous which is yellow.

But they've done a lot of breeding with all the flag irises, and some really pretty colors and forms have come out.

The LA irises that I've seen are 5 feet or more.

Probably more info than needed but just a sample of what is available on the internet. I like to read about different irises to broaden my horizon. You can only go so far with the tall bearded.

The AIS site www.irises.org will have information on the different types.

LA iris can be tiny, too, a foot or less.

I don't know that 'flag'. In our garden, both our versicolor from SIGNA seed and I. setosa are blooming. Setosa is also an American native.

Is setosa referred to as flag too? Looks like everything and anything is called flag, regionally.

Don't know. The bearded pallidas are often called 'flag'.
