Does this JM look familiar to anyone?

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

I got this JM years ago on ebay (I know, I know) but somewhere along the line the tag was lost and half my memory along with it. It's an age thing....

It is a very slow grower, but I just love the shape of the leaves.

very nice leaf shapes. Are they rimmed in red, or is the stem reddish? I couldn't tell from the picture.

It has the leaf shape of Hagoromo. I just had this maple registered with the Maple Society in England. The name is Acer palmatum "Verkade's Jacus Potus". It has the same odd shaped leaf as Hagoromo. I believe there must be 10 or more with this shape that is in existance.

Beaker, yes, the stems are red.

The name Hagoromo doesn't ring a bell. This little tree is probably 6 years old and still only about 15 inches tall.

It certainly does look like your pictures though....

Here's another picture...not sure if it's any better.

I think I remember the name of this tree now. It's Goshiki Kotohime. Does it look like it could be that?

You might as well throw away that label because the picture you posted on May 13th in no way resembles the one you posted today. The May 13th is a picture of an odd leaf. It appears to have one lobe and a short petiole whereas the picture of today showes a leaf with 5 to 7 lobes on a petiole.

Well, I only posted the picture of the tree with that name on plant files. It's not mine... The one I posted on May 13th was just a different shot my tree.

Sorry.

It is not a Goshiki no way not even close .. Hag is closest although BUT you would not have seen that on ebay 6 years ago and 99% sure not today .. it is fairly uncommon... .Hogyoku maybe Hagoromo unlikely. ( those two manes are easily confused .. but totally dissimilar cultivars) check and see it it is grafted you never stated that .. I wouldn't be surprised if it was not but if it is it still could be anything .. nice tree though .. as you know ids of all but a very few Jms is virtually impossible and on any jm 100% surety is also unobtainable .. .

If that is a seedling then you have a great find indeed. There are not that many odd shape leaves in the maple field as of yet. I would think that there might be from 10 to 20 but that does not say there won't be more.

Well, the more I look at my tree and the more I look at the Hagoromo, I think that must be it. Thanks for all your help.

Oh, and yes...it is grafted.
