I was given a hardy amaryllis and I am wondering what it is. I live in zone 7(8). It is red with long strap leaves and it just finished blooming.

If it's white, with red stripes and there were a lot of them, the same color, growing in the yard, of the person giving it to you,it has a good chance of being Hippeastrum H X Johnsonii . Google that name and look to see.

Thanks, I think you are correct it looks similar except for the stripes. I was told it was an amaryllis, guess the 2 genera are closely related?

The true Amaryllis are from Africa and have a similar appearance. They are related to hippeastrum, but don't normally crossbreed. Hippeastrum are from the americas.
I don't know of an Amaryllis which is cold hardy.
