Protecting Iris Plant in Spring time frost

Littleton, CO

Hello,
Do I need to cover the Iris plant if we are going to have frost at end of April? Our weather man was saying that we might have frost tonight. I have lots of Irises. Do I need to cover them?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Keesh

We never cover our iris, and we are at a high altitude. If you have flowers, the frost will melt them for sure if it's really cold for a long period of time. Frost shouldn't hurt the plants. After all, like ours, yours probably spent the winter under snow too.

Keesh,
That's one of the big disappointments for me. The late spring frost after flowering has began. I just go out and pick me a huge arrangement of flowers, for the frost will melt them. It does not at all harm the plant, just the flower.

Here is one of the few dozens gathered last year due to a late freeze.......I cried, I whined, I pouted, but they were pretty inside for a week. This crazy weather here, the days after the freak freeze were in the 80s. The ones that had not already had buds or flowers bloomed out fine. I have stopped buying early bloomers for that reason. I buy those labeled to bloom mid late or late.
