Seed Trading? Popov and Lemon Lime

DeLand, FL(Zone 9b)

Does anyone want to do a swap of hippe seeds? I purchased some of both from eBay, and have a few left over. I have 8 Lemon & Lime seeds, and 10 Popov seeds. Looking for named cultivars only. I have an average 90-98% success rate germinating hippe seeds via the flotation method.

Friday 4-23: I can also add Elvas seeds into this lot after they arrive - just won them on eBay this morning (at least 5 seeds, maybe 8-10, depending on how many he sends me).

Thanks,
Emma

P.S. Per the seller, these seeds were freshly harvested prior to shipping - I received them last week, but it's too soon to see how many will germinate from the lot I have - so far, only 1 seed from Popov is rooting, but that's actually a couple days ahead of schedule since they just went into their water bath on Saturday.

Emma, do you just float your seeds on tap water or do you add anything to prevent mold? Mine always seem to develop mold on top or is the idea to shake the seeds in the container from time to time?

I float them in GladWare containers, but I've found that if I cover them (as directed in most float methods) they get moldy, so I never place a lid on them and the mold is greatly reduced. With the ones that do get moldy on top, I try to pinch off as much as possible, and not allow those to touch the other seeds - often, I get them to germinate. The biggest difference with the way I handle the moldy ones is that I place them into seed starting mix almost immediately after they pop a root, whereas the others I allow to float at least a week until I get a leaf beginning to form. I just keep them moist from that point on with a little water in the bottom and a spray bottle on top. I do the same with zephyranthes and habranthus seeds, which love the floatation method and don't mold. I thought I had issues with moldy seeds because I lived in such a humid environment!

You can add a little peroxide to the water you float them in, it will keep down mold & algae.

Rene10, I've heard that from someone else too, but have never tried it - maybe with my next batch I'll give it a shot since I'm getting some freshly harvested seeds very soon. Thank you for that advice!

I also wanted to add that I seem to have almost no mold with seeds that have been harvested 3-6 months and allowed to sit in paper envelopes than with freshly picked ones - this could be a fluke since I've never actually tested this theory!

Would you be willing to trade for other seeds!

You can always message me with what you have - I don't do veg seeds, plants that are invasive in FL, etc. I'm really looking to expand my collection of special perenials. I'm just as nutty about hemerocallis as hippeastrum! I don't think poppies do very well in zone 9B, but I do really like Papaver somniferum 'Drama Queen' (Papaver somniferum 'Danish Flag' is also pretty, but obviously not nearly as dramatic).

I won't be able to throw in the Elvas seeds after all - the person I bought them from packaged them improperly, and the embryos were pulverized on most of my purchase (plus, he didn't check if the seeds were viable, so 15% aren't even fertile). I'm hoping the 8 that weren't totally damaged make it :(
