anyone have experience with coronary band hoof abcesses?

Hi all!
My Polish Warmblood was just diagnosed with a hoof abcess today. Well, it's the best case scenario, he was on the way to the vet for xrays when it opened up! He was limping on and off for 2 weeks with swelling above his pastern. I was scared it was a tendon or joint injury.
I am soaking him twice daily with epsom salts & giving pen-G injections twice daily too. My question is: has anyone wrapped these before? What's the best way? Vet suggested sugar bandages which worked well on an open lacertion on my dog this summer...
