Bizarre Calendula Blossom

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

This calendula blossom, instead of making a seed head has put out several new buds. Interesting, isn't it?

I've never seen anything like that. I think it is worth saving seeds from it and/or taking cuttings, just for the novelty of it. It will be interesting to see if those "Medusa buds" bloom into flowers themselves.

It looks as if the base of the flower wanted to be pretty longer so it made all those buds! Try to get that picture submitted somewhere, that's a very good example of a wild mutation!

Hi peony1066

Very interesting!!
I growed this Calendula several years ago.
I got the seeds from Chiltern Seeds.

Hen &Chikens Marigold
(Calendula officinalis var. prolifera)

Here are the photo.

Amazing! It's already a named variety. I noticed at least one more becoming a "hens and chicks". I can't remember where I got the seed, but it was just listed as Pacific Beauty. Thanks so much.

That's an interesting one, Tomtom.

WOW! I found one of those on my candman orange plant!! I was sooo shocked when I saw it. I wish I took a picture. It had one very long (1 whole inch!) stem emenating from the sepels of an old bloom. This trait is common, right?
