check out the crack in my maple tree....it will heal itself, won't it? I love this tree, I want it to do well.

Should do, though there'll be a visible line down the bar there for many years.

If it does recover, watch out for invasive seedlings by the thousand . . . there are actually far better trees to go for in your situation.
