Can it be saved?

Houma, LA

I was digging up a varigated hydrangea with the intention to give it away because it is getting too much sun in my zone 9 heat. The root split in two. The growth seemed healthy before I dug it up. Can this plant be saved?

Yes! With TLC it will survive.

The hydrangea below was a division from another clump. I dug it up late spring last year and replanted with very little roots. And whatever roots it got they were barely hanging for dear life. The first three weeks or so it looked like it was going to die. But with the proper care, it put in new growth and bloomed the whole summer.

Thanks so much. I feel hopeful now. I wish mine looked like that but they have not done well since I moved here from NC 3 years ago. Thanks again

Mine are in full sun too, but then I'm up in the Northeast.

Maybe you should choose sun loving or sun tolerant hydrangeas for your region.

Below is Pee Gee. It can be grown as a shrub or a tree.
