Full Sun Annual List for hot dry climates

Arlington, TX

I need some suggestions for annuals for zone 7 TX that can take the heat and dryness of our hellacious summers. I am trying to plant some tough areas and sowing some seeds might be the ticket.

Marigolds, vinca, sunflower, zinnia and cosmos come to mind.

Is your soil sandy, or is it dense with clay? I think it could make a lot of difference since some plants that thrive in one environment will perish quickly in the other.

When I lived in TX I grew Cosmos and Tithonia (mexican sunflower) in dense clay soil with great success. Check out the Wildflower Farms website. They will tell you which flowers grow in which kind of soil.
