Is this black on the bottoms here from stove heat usage or ?

I have a few old pieces that have this black soot like stuff on the bottoms. I thought it is from the heat of a stove or some kind of wood burner. These are all very old pieces of pottery. Someone said it was from the kiln in the firing process . I dont think it is.
