Question about clover as cover crop

Central Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

I want to grow some clover as a cover crop underneath a fruit tree and on a shady side yard. Since it is Spring, I know that I am limited on the ones to plant. The ones I have been looking at are New Zealand Clover, Red Clover and Crimson Clover. All are supposed to be good foder for chickens and attract beneficial insects. Crimson clover is supposed to be planted in the Fall, but is shade tolerent. Does anyone know which will work best for hot climates and sandy soil in a suburban backyard?
