In the summer of 2008, there was a lot of excitement on this forum about biodegradable food grade plastic made from corn. It required massive amounts of energy and water to manufacture and therefore it never caught on. 99% of all plastic is still made from fossil fuel.
Now British scientists have developed a low water, low energy method of making food grade plastic that can be placed in our home compost piles. It's made of crop waste and other non-food plant material. It also decomposes harmlessly in the body and all sorts of medical applications are being explored.
They are in process of commercializing production and predict that it will be in use within 2 to 5 years. It sounds like great news to me.

In 2-5 years, we can put our plastic in the compost pile.
