Age to start teaching a child to sew?

What age is suitable to start teaching a child to do basic sewing, like straight stitching. I have a Janome mini machine that does very basic stitches and goes one speed. Hannah just turned 5 and watches every move I make when I sew. I think I was 8 when Grandma started letting me do squares. What do you think?
