Basting preferences

I am just getting to the point of putting my blocks together for my first quilt. The next step will be basting the 3 layers together.

My question is . . . in your opinion, which is easier? Basting w/needle & thread, or using those little plastic staple gun thingies (yes, real technical speak here!)?
