Beardless iris questions

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

First question is about Louisiana Iris. How much moisture or wet conditions do they need as opposed to can tolerate? I guess what I want to know is do they do well in regular garden conditions? The other question is what are your favorite siberian and louisiana iris for the northeast? Pictures if you have them please.

Louisianas can handle regular garden conditions. When you have the hose out, give them an extra shot of water. Mulch them really well. Mulch is the key. That's what they need as opposed to what their ultimate conditions would be.

I don't grow many Louisianas. They grow well for me, but don't flower well, just not quite hardy enough here.

I have lots of favorite sibs, of course. One of my favorites is Seneca Midnight Blues. All sibs do well in the NE.

Don't have siberian iris pictures in the computer. Older blue I like is Jaybird (Hager). Newer plants I like are Here be Dragons & White Amber. their pickts should be on the Joe-Pye Weed garden website & the site information is not up where the computer is. Polly can you supply it?

Oh dear I see a lot I would love to have here too. So pretty. Thanks for the info on LI. I never see any around here and was wondering how they do up here. They are so pretty though. The sibs do well here so I may need more. I really like 'So Van Gogh'. I might have to get that one soon.

Pixie, I hate to enable, but those were 2009 intros and should be down in price this year :)

So Van Gogh is the most beautiful iris I have ever seen. I think it's what a siberian should look like. Mine has been a very slow grower, though.

Louisianas might do well for you, Patti. I think it would be worth while to try a couple of them. You can get them inexpensively from some of the growers. They certainly are gorgeous. In Rochester NY, they are grown successfully, and you are a little warmer yet. I think you might just not be seeing them around, as they are not well known in the north. There are certain ones that were hybridized in more northern areas, and the growers can tell you which ones those are.

I would recommend Louisiana Iris Farms

Or Zydeco

They will tell you which ones should do best for you, and I understand both are great companies to work with.

Oh, and if you're looking for something different, have you considered spuria? Very hardy, they will do fine here. They look like a huge dutch iris. Great for cutting.

Snowpeak carries a lot of them.

Also, I didn't see you mention Japanese. They will do excellent for your area.

Oh dear. so many beauties. Thinking maybe next year I will need to make an iris bed down in the front by the drive. Just sibs and J. iris and maybe a few L. iris too. I have a bunch of Stella DL that need dividing and they might be a nice edging for them. Hmmmm. Okay next year iris, shrubs and a couple really pretty trees.

Wonderful to be thinking ahead to that already. That gives you plenty of time to prepare.
