That is a stem of one of they coleus that didn't make it in our cold/freeze weather. As you see, when they grown all year the stems get like trees. Unfortunately, that also helps to their demise for they do not get deep roots, either that is their way or it's because the grow in about 2 inches of soil here with the rest be almost total coral rock, and they fall over.
Being the troopers that they are, when they fall, they just sprout at almost every node and they turn into small, 4-5' bushes.
They are amazing plants.
