To peel, or not to peel?

Are we supposed to peel offf the dead brown stuff before potting an amaryllis bulb? I didn't, then just now I peeled a little off one with a baby. The baby was trying to put up a leaf underneath, so I peeled some off the others with babies.

here's the baby, came out blurry but you get the idea.

I peel em' before planting when I have time.

I wouldn't. Some covering helps protect the bulb from
becoming waterlogged/developing rot. If there's a lot of extra
material around the live part, I'd take off a few layers to
clean it up a bit, but I'd leave a layer or two in
place.

I peel.My thinking is that the dead scales can hold water against the bulb and thus harbor fungus etc.

edited to add;mine are all grown inside, under shadecloth. If outside I might worry a little about sunscald on the unprotected bulb.

There could be a lot of hidden surprises under those dead skin. Better catch them before it's too late.

Thanks, I think I should've peeled them since the inner bulbs are pulled away from the dead skin (though the bulb is still firm, just smaller, which makes sense since they're just blooming or just finished). I'm also afraid they'll hold water in there. Plus it was stifling the cute little babies! Can't have that.
