What's happening in your neighborhood?

Victoria Harbour, ON

Morning, just noticed that the thread was up in numbers so thought I'd move us over from here...

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1056373/

I've so enjoyed talking with you all through this past year..
Perhaps 2010 will be the year that some of us can meet each other..wouldn't that be grand...

Sitting, doing crochet (afghan for me this time) and enjoying a tree lit...
remembering Christmas's gone by....

Marilynne just posted as I was changing rooms...so I'll move her post to this one...

See, I'm not the only one up early...

Here goes...

I ordered a cheese and meat tray for Christmas Eve .. so much easier than knocking myself out with a big meal .. that's coming on the 25th.

Another mild day here .. have to be at the hosp for an 8:30am appt !!! I sure hope that more snow has been cleared away .. it was hellish pushing Lorna's wheelchair through the muck and mire when we were there yesterday !!

Enjoy your day

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Thank you for the move, Betty - I'm looking forward to doing some quilting during the holidays.

Marilyn - I hope your path with Lorna is easier, both figuratively, and literally.

Betty - to meet some of you is my fondest wish, but I'm sooooo far west of many of you, that it's costly (unless we're talking BC, then it's not so far!). Here's Hoping!!

I hope to take off early today (I have loads of "lieu" time I can take - once I have my work done...)

Merry Christmas to you all!
We delivered our "adopted family" stuff to them yesterday and all our office were a little teary about it. We filled a car to the brim with groceries and a box of presents. It feels so good to know that we will feed a Mom and little girl for months so in filling their tummies we also support their spirit. That makes me feel better when I see our crazy tree. Even though we have scaled back it is still way more than most people in the world so I feel very blessed.
We have a work lunch today where we get spoiled by our boss and that is on top of already being taken out to lunch, getting a pointsetta and a turkey! What a difference to being in retail!

Thanks, Betty, for moving us over. It hadn't been a problem with the really hi-speed here at DD's house in Vancouver, but it would have been at home with our "hi-speed lite".

Cold is still with me but mostly just a latent cough. I will opt out of meeting Aunt Alma at the airport and taking her to the residence where Aunt Esther lives. They don't need germy me there and I should be two days more imjproved by Christmas.

On the docket today is getting to a yarn store near DD for additional knitting needles of various sizes. I finished the afghan I made for little Leila - will post pics when we get home. And DD had some bulky yarn she bought to make Leila a sweater, but she never got around to it. Using 10 mm needles, I whipped it up in about 2 days, but we need a small circular needle for picking up neck stitches. I also need smaller circulars (40 cm rather than 60 cm) than I brought with me for working on a hat for myself - likely a project for the airplane on Saturday.

We'll also make some dinner rolls today and get a start on various Christmas dinner projects.

Have a good day.

Hello to all. I am more of a lurker than participator in this forum but I totally love the friendly support. I played my last Messiah of the year and my daughter got here from New York (three days late, minus luggage, but at least she's here). Wishing everyone here a very restful and wonderful holiday.

Hope everyone has some beautiful plants to get them through the short days we are having. I am loving my phalenopsis(es) and my amaryllis(es)!

Hi Theresa - glad you popped in and especially glad that your DD got there even if without luggage.

I also wish all of you a very happy holiday.

I've just come back from an excursion to a yarn shop about 3 km from DD's house. Got the knitting needles I needed, but the ones they carry are top of the line and a tad expensive. Before heading out I made the rolls for Christmas dinner and some cinnamon buns with the leftover dough and peeled three bags of those tiny onions. My hands look like I'm a nicotine addict.

Another Merry Christmas to all on this forum.

My folks arrived today, they're in good spirits and generally decent health. I made some shortbread today... It was a failure, they were very crumbly. Tonight the meatloaf was tasty. tomorrow I'll cook the squash and make the potatoes romanoff, both for Christmas Day dinner. They brought a 22lb turkey! I hope it fits in the oven. The cleaning is done, the wrapping is done, the decorating is done... now it's time to cook and enjoy family, both blood family and family of choice.

Best wishes for a rejuvenating and happy few days.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Lovely card, Don. thanks for sharing it.

Glenda - sorry about the crumbly shortbread but glad your folks arrived safely. I hope you have a safe and happy holiday.

WEll .. we'll be hunkered down here for at least 2 days .. maybe 3 as we watch a Colorado Low passing through. An estimated 25-30cm dump is expected .. OH JOY !!!

Making up bags of Lilly's dog food this afternoon, and, changing the water in the BETTA vase .. am thinking I will take his pic prior to doing that in case I off him !!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone :-)

Merry Christmas to all and Happy Christmas birthday to Glenda. Hope all of you have a wonderful holiday.

We've opened gifts and the turkey is about to go into the oven. We're doing the stuffing separately and it's already in the oven. Two great-aunts and DH's cousin will arrive in a few hours.

Hope everyone is well and happy and just imagine .. after all our plans, and worries .. the DAY is almost gone !!!

We'll be shopping........... last minute stuff for our Christmas Dinner, on Boxing Day lol We need more organges, egg nog and a Christmas pudding!

Also, spoke to a friend today, and she asked what equipment she needed to play CDs. She has 1 of GD, and 2 others, but no way to play 'em. I told her we'd pick a CD player up for her, and that it would be less than $50. Turns out we can get a boombox with CD and radio for $20 at XS Cargo!

I got a USB record player so I can burn my vinyl to CD! Really happy about that!! My DH wanted to get me one last year, and I said no. Thought about it for 11 months, and decided I want one after all. Sure helps to be able to play a CD away from home lol
Guess I know one of the things I'll be doing on my Christmas vacation ^_^

Morning, happy Boxing Day..seems I missed Christmas...
Was quite a day, started at about 5:30 and went on until 1:30am..couldn't sleep, to wound up with having family here so thought I'd come downstairs and clean some of the wrapping paper..

Santa was more than generous, gift far too numerous to mention...but did get $$$ for new washroom countertop, zinc and taps and I'd say about 1/2 the $$$ I need to ceramic tile the kitchen floor so I'm happy as can be..

Now I must say I was touched that Kyle in shop for 4 weeks made me this gardening hook, I'm able to hand a plant, the metal sign reads welcome and it's large bottom stake will keep it well anchored in the ground...I have a lot of metal art..he tells me that this piece will take on the rust look once it's in the garden so that it matched all the other pieces..at 14 he's quite the crafter..wonder who he takes after..lol..

Hope you are all safe today if you've bad weather...just relax, feet up and enjoy your day...

Telephones I got the kids went over big time...lol...lot of texting last night..thought I was at Rama Casino with all the rings going on..

Just have to thank the Lord that he's blessed us all ...from motorcycles to ipods to trips to Jamaica..omg my family has been spoilt...

Praying that Santa has been good for you all as well!!!

Thank you for being my friends, what a great neighborhood we all live in...

God bless you and yours..

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Bob got me a USB record player, so now I can record my vinyl onto the computer, and save them to CD!! Whoooooo Hoooooooo!! I was playing with it last night, and I musta been tired, cuz when I finished the saving to the computer, I followed what I thought were the right instructions, and converted my 33's to 78rpm!! LOL you shoulda heard the Scottish music being played at chipmunk speed!!!!! Alvin would have been so happy LOL Amazing Grace doesn't quite sound the same as I'm used to at 78rpm ^_^
Good thing I hadn't wasted a CD and it's still on the 'puter!
I re-did it of course, and now it sounds fine lol

I am just everso happy 'THE Day' is done .. I have enough instruction manuals to confuse me for quite awhile LoL

Xmas here in Thunder Bay, weatherwise, has been awful ... LOTS of heavy wet snow .. now freezing rain .. a real Hodge Podge .. thanks heaven for snowblowers .. but .. even at that .. the bits and bats that need to be shoveled are HEAVY !!

Glad all are well

Checking in on Boxing Day. Christmas with little Leila and the great Aunts was a wonderful day. Actually, cousing Carol didn't bring the Aunts until about 3:30 which gave us a fairly leisurely day after gifts were opened. Leila, at 18 mos, enjoyed the gifts but wasn't yet into the frantic Christmas anticipation that older kids have.

I finished her afghan and the sweater her Mom asked me to knit up on bulky needles while here - will post pics once we are home. We leave Vancouver on a 4:35 pm flight due to arrive in Ottawa around midnight. It's been a good visit here but I'll look forward to Ontario sun even if it means cold. Have to admit, we DID have sun for Christmas day - the only day since we've been here.

Next check-in will be tomorrow from Ottawa, I hope. Have a good Boxing Day.

Had a nice Xmas dinner last evening with family of a friend of mine who often invite me - the hostess says I'm part of the crowd now! Only 20 for dinner last evening! Last year there were 28! As I left she said you know we need to get our phone numbers from Jennifer and get together in the summer not just at Xmas!

Arrived home to find the Xmas tree had fallen over - onto a chair not the floor fortunately. Must have looked pretty funny me trying to hold up the tree while feeling around the base( which is underneath a tree skirt) to try to find out what happened!
Apparently one of the 3 legs of the base was not fitted in properly - that maybe happened last week when I decided to move the tree from the TV room to the living room? And the base fell off? That was interesting too ! Well it stayed up all night so I will leave it alone - thought I would have to take it down today.

Dogs all surviving nicely - It has been warm enough to have walks and lots of play time in the yard. Shilo and Tug both love to chase balls but I have to do it individually with all the others in the house otherwise it gets rather noisy!

Morning, welcome home Ann..we didn't have sunshine Christmas day but did have great weather for those travelling..rained most of yesterday then a few flurries...clear out there this morning...

While all were resting I put 80 percent of the Christmas decorations away, this morning the rest go into totes for yet another year...

OMG the upstairs looks bare after everything gone and almost colorless...will be nice not dodging Christmas things when walking..kitties are pleased their favorite bench is back at the front window so they can spend the day watching the world go round...

Ohhhh Susan, that sounds terrific, I've so many records, hmmm wonder if someone non-computer literate could figure it out? First off I'd have to find a record player to play them right? lol

"M" hope you've better weather today, how's Lorna...you got to just love manuals don't you..in the drawer they go until all else fails...

Carol, much the same, we always have a craft workshop, this year they've made me promise to do something come summer...omg can just imagine you and the tree, giggle/giggle...we do get ourselves into messes don't we...

Don, did you enjoy sunshine..bet you did...waving hello..

Well if I sit here much longer that will be the end of my energy spout so hoping you all enjoy your day..be back later...

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Welcome home Ann .. am fervently hoping you were not harrassed by over zealous security folks .. but .. then again, they are just doing their job, and with that scare in the US I do imagine the situation re airport security is going to get even more strict ..

Betty .. I am trying to put 'stuff' away .. but I am the consummate 'direction changer' .. I am heading to put something in an already exploding closet .. and on my way there, I notice something far more interesting and POOF .. train of thought GONE !!
Lorna is slowly heading along her journey to her prosthesis .. still has some issues with wound healing that are infuriating her .. slow and steady wins the race ... hope that's true !!

Carol .. DAWG .. what a predicament to be in .. betcha the poochies wished THEY had had a camera !!!

Hoping to have a SHOVEL LESS day today .. !!

~M~

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Betty - it comes with a record player - that's part of the pkg, that and a CD to install the software on the computer.and you have a choice of a beginner (walk you through everything) to an advance install.
It takes as long as to play the record, plus about 10 minutes to save it to a CD (burn, in other words)

Susan

Victoria Harbour, ON

Hmmm sounds interesting, will have to check that one out...

"M" laughing here...hard to stay focused at this time of year, so many distractions...glad Lorna is improving and yes slowly is better...

Just checked outside, snowing lightly, didn't listen to the weather forecast..we all hoped and prayed weather would be great for those travelling for Christmas...which it was sooo bring on the snow..just think sooner it comes, sooner it goes...

Won't it be fun to see spring again and all new life in the garden..speaking of gardens, friend Diane gave me an amarylis (?) for Christmas..have to read directions tomorrow to start the growth process, not sure if I'm to wait until spring or not??

Had an incident yesterday afternoon..friend Ann came over and when leaving we went out the back deck..now it's closed in for winter so it lessens my having to shovel, what I do it with wood I attach plastic and cover over the door, in the bottom I put a 2x4 to hold the plastic down so the snow can't blow in..works great..however, with putting all the totes in the back shed I lifted the 2x4 and supported it on the main roof while I was going in/out...saying goodbye Ann went out, hit the plastic, 2x4 came down and hit me in the head..wow..that smart..so a few headache pills and calls from Greg every hour to make sure no concussion I slept all aft. and evening...well here I am 1:00 am trying to sleep and can't..going to make hot chocolate and llay down again..will be a long night if I can't sleep...

Do any of you get your days and nights mixed up???

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Betty .. jeeze Louise that must have smarted .. have to applaud Greg for his attentiveness and i sincerely hope that you feel better today.

Days and nights 'mixed up' .. heck YES from me .. in fact .. Lorna naps in the afternoon .. during that time I usually did quite things .. then I realized that just MAYBE I might benefit form a half hour to an hours nap in the afternoon. I had to stop after 2 sessions as when I went to bed at night I basically laid awake staring at the ceiling !!!

Windy here .. took Lilly out about 7am and realized the patio and sidewalk needed shoveling (the VON comes this morning) the snow if fluffy .. but as I looked over in the dark towards my perennial beds, I tried to project ahead a few months :-)

Hope everyone enjoys the last week of 2009 .. can;t hardly believe a year has passed by AGAIN !!!

~M~

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Good morning,

I see I didn't check in yesterday though I remember reading. We got home with no problems in spite of fog in Vancouver and freezing rain in Ottawa. Flight was delayed about 30 minutes due to strong head winds, but no ground problems. I'm just getting out some of my Christmas decs since we were away so early.

We have a large "Epiphany" open house which will be next Sunday afternoon. That will be the focus of the week. Most baking is already done, but there are other things to prepare and a house to clean as it is a large enough party to take over the whole house.

This afternoon we will get together with DD#1 and family here in Ottawa.

Hope you have a great day. Here's a pic of Leila to start off the morning. Don't know whether she will be right handed or left handed as she uses both interchangeably when eating. In this pic she's shovelling in plain yogurt with a fork in the right hand and a spoon in the left.
