question for Vista users

my XP desktop died Monday,leaving me with a thumbdrive full of pictures to be transferred to my Vista laptop. erring is easy.Transferring with names intact has not happened so far.I am talking about 2000 or so pix and they must keep their names.
Any suggestions?I am used to being able to drag and drop from the Windows explorer list but have not found anything similar on Vista.
