Last thread had 300 post so I thought i'd start a new one.
We are coming from here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1058933/#top
So what gets you thru the winter? Books, plants, seed magazine's?
My pink Thanksgiving Cactus is almost done blooming and my peach colored one is now in bud. ^_^
At the begining of the last thread I posted a picture of my Amaryllis 'Siren' on Nov. 27, today the second stalk is in bloom. Nice having flowers in the house all this time.
Indoor Blooms & things that get you through the winter #2
Yesterday and today.....my FIREPLACE is getting me thru the winter! LOL
16 degree's this morning and thats was w/out the windchill. UGH!!!
Pretty! Not a AV is it? It's it's cousin but I forget what ya call them.
Is the dirt a special secret recipe for AV's?
apricot Christmas cactus staring to bloom, hope it keeps up for christmas.
I am soooo thrilled.I just noticed the annual appearance of the cymbideum.
Its DD 's plant, abused (seldome watered) and neglected( fed once a year) until this year.
I wanted to see more bloom spikes so I used Boojums formula for feeding more than once a year and watering regularly.
Its putting out its bloom and I see only one for all the care I gave it.
By January there will be some beauties on there.
Here's what up
I got a box of dirt once too. When I asked, the person said it was earth worm poop for the helleboros that they also sent. I didnt know what the plant was supposed to look like, didnt see any roots or anything so I planted the whole thing under my lunaria plant. I never got any helleboros to come up but my lunaria bloomed profusely that year:-)
I'll bet! LOL! It's a special mix for AV's that I'm trying.
Good luck with it. Does it smell funny? :-)
Congrats, Jo Ann!!!!
Good luck Jo Ann, im anxious to see pics. ^_^
Boojum is that a soft peach color? It's lovely, I like the two-tone effect.
Nice blooms---you are going to have orchid blooms, Jo Ann---yea! I went to water my hibiscus---aphids! Got the spray & soaked the plant---hope it's OK.

Jadajoy--How did you know?
very pretty blooms!!
I kick myself that I didnt buy Amarillis this year
I didn't buy any either, so I thought. All of mine are in the dark. But now I've bought 4, 2 in bloom and two bulbs! Jo Ann they are everywhere I go, so don't count yourself out yet!
boo, I usually pass right by supermarket flowers. Need to slow down and look. Yours are beautiful.
PV-- I was thinking of the fish emulsion I use. It certaintly smells "funny". :-)
Ahhh! I am familiar with that stinky stuff--LOL! I have not opened my box of dirt yet, but the friend who sent it warned me it had an odor on initial use, d/t the ingredients she mixes into it. She has been growing violets since she was a child, has > 1,000 AVplants, and prepares her own potting mix in a cement mixer. Her plants are gorgeous!
Oooh, anything stinky is probably good for them :-)
I have cats. Can't use fish emulsion.
Congratulations Jo Ann!! How exciting!
I broke down. I was feeling so lost without the promise of Amaryllis blossoms this winter, that I bought three bulbs and 17 narcissus! That should do me.
Wow finally a new thread thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jo Ann---not too late for amaryllis---I bought some in late Jan., & had nice blooms in Feb. Would like to get some for when we return from trip.
If I recall Patti had them blooming into spring.
Must be she staggared the plantings.
Well mine are still in dormancy so they will cheer me up from January into spring.
Very pretty, Jo!
Thanx Victor.
very nice joann
thnx bill
beautiful Jo Ann!
Very luvly!
Great one, Jo Ann. Post it when you finish, too.
Wow Jo Ann! Thats is beautiful, wish I had that kind of talent.
A number of flowering houseplants get me through the winter. In particular are the waxy-leaved Begonia semperflorens that bloom as if it were spring! They spend summers outdoors, and come inside in September. I've had them for many years. Here they are, occupying the top two shelves of this window garden:
