Hubby's hobby, my responsibility?

Hello all!

Hubby's hobby took a turn for the obsessive. We now
have a greenhouse full of out-of-control citrus. They
are not gigantic, but very productive. I tried not to
nose into hubby's project, so I did nothing in terms
of pruning, potting, etc.

Now that winter approaches and they are all in the
greenhouse, it is obvious they are just mangled plants
with many branches going in every direction. He meant
well.

Could anyone steer me in the direction of assistance?
I hate to just start whacking off branches, and am in
need of direction. They are healthy and blooming and
all is well otherwise, but out of control.

Citrus tend to be bushy. If they are going in that direction, it is normal. If you you want them to look like single trunk trees, start pruning off lower branches. You can take a few branches off and then wait a few months and do more.

I agree with Jujube.
You can also prune back the branches and thin out, just like you would another evergreen.
Just make sure not to rmove more than 1/3 in one season.

They make wonderful small trees that still produce that way.

The poor things had never been pruned at all. Misshapen branches,
large fruit on tiny limbs breaking, etc.

They are really looking good, and hubby is happy with the pruning thus far.
I'm not pruning anything that is flowering or with good growth.
