Eastern King Snake (Lampropeltis getula nigra). They are great snakes to have around--will eat mice, rats, and venomous snakes!

How in the world did you get that close to take such a great picture? I would have been running like a little girl and screaming....

I've never seen a King Snake before.... we do have a problem with rats, so glad to see him. Thanks for the ID, passiflora_pink. This was a young one, and I was using my 300 mm, standing a few feet away.

I have caught many king snakes in my day. They have a cool underbelly, with white and black scales reminiscent of a piano keyboard. I have actually seen one in mortal combat with a rattlesnake--the kingsnake won and ate the rattler. They are welcome around my house any time!

WOW... that must have been something to see. My sister had 3 kindsnakes ... one was pretty big... 5' or so... then a black and white western king she found as a baby. a scarlet king.. he was a real sweety. Can't recall which kind the big one was though...
