It is an Earthstar, Geastrum. I think it is Geastrum saccatum. Was it near Redwood trees?

The fungus is not considered edible, but it is not toxic or deadly. Some species of Geastrum are edible when young.

you are probably correct Dave, yes they were amongst the Redwoods.
but they ( saccatum) are described as being small (2-5 cm across when arms expand) and this one was at least 3 1/2+" ?
yes it is an Earthstar
somewhere i had seen the ( STARWARS ) DeathStar name relating to the puffballs with wings
and couldn't get it out of my mind when i described this one :-)
