spotted cucumber beetle

Saint Louis, MO

My cosmos are being devoured by spotted cucumber beetle. any suggestions? We should be getting a freeze soon but what can I do now to prepare for next spring? I spotted many large preying mantids earlier in season but not lately.

When I see bad bugs, I squish them with my fingers, except June Bugs and Japanese Beetles - they bite!

You might try putting some soapy water in a small container and knocking the cucumber beetles into it. That's what I do for the June Bugs and Japanese Beetles.

Beneficial nematodes sprayed on your soil in the spring should help control them. The beetle lays eggs at the base of the plant in the soil so when the larva hatch the nematodes will find them.

I recently read that these beetles' eggs are light weight so tilling over winter throws them to the surface and helps reduce the number hatching.
