Mosaicing my grandmother's bridbath question

I was given my grandmother's birdbath after she passed away and I would like to mosaic it. I have been collecting a lot of fun stufff to use and reading lots of books and forums like this one. I love it and hope to try a Bowling ball after I do the birdbath.

My question is .... Do I need to clean the cement birdbath with anything before I begin adhering the tiles and such to it? Also exactly what do I seal it with when I am finished? I am planning this as winter project so I can put it out in Spring 2010.
