"Barnacles" on my passie

I brought in all of my plants yesterday for the winter. I noticed on one of my passies what looked like barnacles on the main stem, when crushed they were red inside. Any ideas???

If they looked like http://tinyurl.com/yg6nmaq or http://tinyurl.com/yk7gsr5, they could be scale insects (Hemiptera/Sternorrhyncha; superfamily Coccoidea).

You are absolutely correct. They are one of the scale insects. Here is a pic of what they looked like, I borrowed the pic from absoluteastronomy.com since I didn't take a pic myself.
