Florida Sandhill Crane (Grus canadensis pratensis)
How on earth do they manage to survive everyones' dogs going for them? No way a large bird like that would be able to survive in a suburban situation like this here, sadly :-(

Resin: In most cities here in Florida there is a leash law where dogs must be leashed when outside unless of course they are on their own fenced property.
This little community where our friends have a vacation home on the intracoastal waterway, has a couple of pairs of sandhill cranes, many large and small herons, and many ducks. People walk their dogs along the same trail these herons are walking. If the dogs get too close, the birds just walk away or sometimes fly a short distance to another location. The homeowners are very good about reeling in the leash if their dogs get too rambunctious. The Sandhill Crane's are magnificent birds!
You're lucky!
People here feel their mutts have a full right to roam wherever they like, unrestrained (and also to be emptied anywhere and everywhere, without let or hindrance . . . watch where you tread )-:
