Barkless Flowering Almond

(Zone 6a)

Hi There, When I did part of the fall cleanup in my garden today I noticed (much to my dismay) voles have knawed all the bark off the bottom 6 inches of my flowering almond. I've put chicken wire around the base of the bush to keep the voles off (we're in the process of dealing with them) but what can I do to help save my bush? Whats the most practical thing I can to do help it survive now and through the winter?

Thank you,
Steven

It might be OK, depending on how deep the voles have gnawed. Nothing really you can do, other than protect it from further damage, and hope for the best. Prunus species do seem to survive ring-barking better than many other trees so the prospects are not as bleak as one might think.

Note that chicken wire won't stop voles, they can easily get through the holes.

G'Day, Depending on the age and value (sentimental) of your plant you could try "In Arch or Bridge Grafting" . It is not so very difficult to do or you could hire someone to do it for you but that could be expensive and perhaps more than the tree is worth.
