Muli Patterns on the Same Plant

Yonkers, NY(Zone 5b)

This is Trailing Psycholeus. I was amazed at the various pattern that emerged on the same plant.
Some were solid, others patterned, others had leaves split half & half.
I guess that's how it got its name - PSYCHO - it has multiple personalities!
LOL!

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Wow, Nancy! Your "Trailing Psycholeus' looks just like the coleus called 'Careless Love'. It is amazing to get all those variations on one plant ...

are those sports?

Yonkers, NY(Zone 5b)

LOL!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

NO!!! REALLY!!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yeah I would think so... would keep them for sure

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

DGer wrote to say those ARE sports.
I wonder if a sport continues with the coloring it has or reverts to the parent.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I'd imagine it would continue.

I'd also be curious as to just how many sports a coleus can produce once it starts going off track or if it just produces the same sport repeatedly.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

DD says any verigated plant is that way due to a virus ,introduced by the hybredizer to make it verigate.
When the virus works its way out of the plant the verigation ends.
I'm not sure this applies to coleus sports or not.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

A DG person from long ago, drdon, also subscribed to the virus theory.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Just talked to DD ,She says yes a virus is introduced but not necessarily.
So we re back where we started.
I have taken a cutting from the only full grown Watermelon Sport thats living.
I just want to see what happens.
I think Dale thegardner answered the question on sportage but I'm too lazy to search.

Yonkers, NY(Zone 5b)

OH! I had no idea what you were talking about, JoAnn!
I never heard the word "sport" before in regard to plants.

This was one of the coleus I purchased from Rosy Dawn thru the co-op here at DG.

My RD co-op coleus Trailing Psycoleus has sported like yours.
I have taken in a sport from Watermelon.

Ray's book is a good value. I hope he is saving up photos so that he can make the next one include more varieties.

I was kicking myself in the butt for not buying it when I went to Atlock and met him last year

About sports - I would shy away from the virus theory. Virus' produce random colors, not all the sports I have seen have the broken colors in their leaves - like Chato>

Some sports are stable in leaf color - a trait I would guess that is new genes.

The Red Delicious apple was an odd branch on an orchard tree - it is very stable genetically speaking.

This sport stayed stable>

pretty one too

I took a cutting from a Watermelon sport I planted this spring.
Just for kicks to see what happens.
Dale- love electric lime too.Its doing well inside for cuttings this winter.
Some parents have given up growing vigerous stems so my projections for lots of plants is getting pulled back.

Coleus is a greenhouse plant in the the lower 48 states, if you want them as a perennial.
