Stomping, stamping, tamping

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Whatever you want to call it....

How hard to you usually press down on the soil around newly planted flowers?

I read somewhere a long time ago you shouldn't press the soil down too hard. Then I saw a show just recently and the guy was really stamping on the soil.

I usually don't press it down too hard and have pretty good luck with my plantings. Thoughts????

i press down although do not stamp/jump - just enough to make sure there are no large air pockets down there

I think that's overrated. Even with minimal packing down, let alone 'stomping', the soil will settle after watering a few times. Roots need air too.

Usually about 4.3 ft-lbs/ sq in.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

are you sure it is not 4.5 ft-lbs/ sq in?
