Do you put batting between squares in a denim rag quilt?

I have a bunch of old jeans so I was going to cut 5 inch squares of denim and put a 5 inch square of flannel on the back then sew them together in rows with the raggy edges out toward the denim side. Do I need to put a smaller square of batting in between the denim and flannel?
