Could it be an Iresine? Also known as a beefsteak plant.

WOW! Many thanks for that. I think you are right. Although Beefsteak Plant is also used to refer to Perillas ( Japanese mint). I think this is an Amaranth

Just curious, how on earth did you get this plant??? you live in Washington DC, which is really far from Madagascar! i live in mozambique, which is right across from madagascar. all that separates us is the Mozambique Channel.
i haven't seen this plant before, quite pretty though.

Oh, the thread name said Madagascar plant. but it doesn't look like too a fragile plant, is it hardy? its probably now in a number of other countries other than brazil.

I got this in Southern Madagascar. I have never seen it in the US before.

It's commonly sold here in Virginia and other state's as well.
