Oh, I knew it was a regular house--just one made with logs--it's gorgeous--be it a house or a cabin! What's the story on the bottle tree--aren't they supposed to bring good luck? (Maybe I have my stories mixed-up?)

Well we started the NEWer Pond install today.
Not really new or a pond... we're putting the 100 gallon stock tank in the ground next to the Patio.
It will be mainly for plants and the big Comets from Bertie will probably go in there at least until Winter.
Hit a haul at the Hatchery today.
They had 6" Butterfly Koi in the 6" Regular Koi tank.
Due to quarantine regulations they couldn't move them again.
So we got 22 dollar fish for 8 Bucks!

For some reason we haven't had a mosquito since June of 2008. Nobody knows why, but it sure is peaceful without them.

We used to see these down a lot in LA when I was a kid.
Bottle trees if my memory serves originated in Africa.
But then it was plates hung from trees near graves to honor the dead.
The tradition was brought here and was very common in the Deep South.
Plates became replaced w/ bottles over time.
Story goes (my Grandmother's version).
The bottles collect bad or family spirits at night then the Sun then destroys them in the morning.
or (the other version I heard down there)
The sunlight attracts them and they are most attracted to blue.
The bottles are then corked and thrown in the river.
Pick your myth.
I'm guessing the sound of the wind blowing across the bottles started the spirit thing.... whoooooooo....
I wish the Plecostomus were winter hardy!
They would be cool in the pond!

I guess we all adapt to our local natural disasters. To me, tornadoes seem the scariest. They just come out of nowhere and bam! But you can see why I'm always talking about such-and-such place burned x years ago, such-and-such plant is a fire follower, and so on.

They are evacuating the neighborhood 1 1/2 miles from my BIL.
But the small animal evac center is between him and the mountains so he's in absolutely no danger.
It's about 3/4 of a mile of houses and businesses drive to the actual brushy areas.
As Kelli knows we are very familiar w/ all the area that's burning above Tujunga.
We've driven the roads to Mt Wilson a dozen times.
Twisty and steep and very narrow in many places.
It's actually scarey in a few spots.
I pity the firefighters. They'd almost need to be rock climbers above the reservoir.

The 100 gallon tank is planted almost to the rim.
Small crack repaired and curing.
Tomorrow we'll do the side tank/filter and fill the thing.

Our lows this morning were in the 40s. Since my quilt was hiding my dad's bday present I was stuck with a thin sweater and felt like I was sleeping outside in shorts and a tank. LOL. Sun finally came out and warmed up the temps to mid 70s. So not bad at all today!! Tonight back in the 40s.

Kelli: tornadoes don't just come out of nowhere these days--we usually have at least 5 minutes warning!! (not much comfort in that!) and if you live in a flat area (rare in this part of Arkansas) you can see them coming for miles--just like your fires with all the smoke.
Another absolutely gorgeous day here in our part of the south--I keep wondering how tlong this is going to last but I'm enjoying it while it does.
My "baby" has an ear infection in both ears--had to take him to the vet today. Here is his photo from a few months back--he's grown a lot since then--he now weighs 15 lbs. If he keeps growing, he won't be considered a Miniature Schnauzer much longer! He's a true gardener--he likes to smell the roses, too. LOL

Boy, everybody laughs at living in MN because of winter. Winter is a piece of cake compared to hot weather, floods, drought, fires, earthquakes, hurricanes, & all other calamities people need to put up with in the rest of the country!
