I have been making such table-top landscapes out of styrofoam, which is used for packing electronic goods in India. This material, which is useless otherwise, can be converted in to beautiful artefacts. Pieces of styrofoam are stuck with an adhesive. The structure thus created is etched with hot soldering iron, to give it the texture of stone. After this it is painted with acrylic colours.
