The properties are aromatic and tonic.

It is good for culinary uses as well. The flowers are delicious!

so can you make a tea from the leaves?
and if the flowers are delicious, could you use them in a tropical fruit salad?

Keaau, HI

Oh yes! The young leaves are good in salads too. Leaves can be added fresh or dried to meat, poultry, and fish.

Thank you, Metros!
i have heard that sage is good for tonsillitus, does that include pineapple sage? i often have trouble with my tonsils.

Hi Westraad, I can't find any reference that says it's good for that.

Hey, westraad!

I found it on a chilean webpage mentioned Salvia officinalis for ailments of the neck (gargantua? I don't speak Spanish, but I understand some...), among other uses: digestive, cicatrization of skin wounds, etc

I found this about the sage

Medicinal use
Pineapple sage is extensively used in Mexican traditional medicine, especially for the treatment of anxiety. Although scientific information about these medicinal properties is scarce, a preliminary study on mice found support for the plant potentially having antidepressant and anti-anxiety properties
That is a good picture I never had my to bloom yet.
Thanks for posting

Mine is almost constantly blooming. does it require pruning after it flowers?

Keaau, HI

Yes, cut the stems back to the first set of leaf shoots (branches) that haven't flowered.

Ok, thanks metro!

Hi,
The Salvia in the photo above is not Salvia elegans commonly known as Pineapple Sage. I believe you have one of the many cultivars of either Salvia microphylla or greggii or one their crosses.

Oh, ok. at the nursery they told me its pineapple sage, but they could have been wrong. now i know! thanks Andy.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

That would be easy to check. The microphylla and the greggii smell sort of stinky (to me) when you touch them. Pineapple sage smells and tastes like pineapple.

Xai Xai, Mozambique

in that case, it must be pineapple sage, mine has a strong pineapple smell!

Hi,
There are a few cultivars of S. microphylla that have a bit of a pineapple aroma, though the picture in question is definitely not S. elegans.

Andy

Xai Xai, Mozambique

does S. Microphylla have the same uses as S. Elegans?
