Forsythias not blooming - ?

(Sheryl) Gainesboro, TN(Zone 6b)

Well, I mean they didn't bloom this spring. Actually, they haven't the past two springs. The first year I attributed it to the previous years drought (?) but this year they didn't have that excuse. They're huge old bushes, probably somewhere around 30-50 years old - do they need to be cut back or something? Could they just be at the end of the road (please, no!)?

Any help is appreciated!

A severe drought can leave a tree short of energy for several years - if it e.g. killed off most of the root system, the plant will be putting all available energy into producing new roots anf foliage, rather than flowers.

Okay, perhaps it *was* the drought, then. I appreciate the comments, Resin - thanx!
