HELP - powdery mildew is taking over my gardens. I am spraying with baking soda/soap mixture. Can mildew survive the winter IN THE SOIL if the ground doesn't freeze solid? Will I hav e to tear out perrenials - like monarda? a "climbing" rose? an azalea? I don't want to use chemicals - we feed a lot of birds.

This has answers to all of your questions, and it is accurate information. I see it is from the U of Calif at Davis:

Nutshell - Try using horticultural oil or neem oil at this point. But there is much more information there - so be sure to read.
