Unexpected Ayesha flowers

Colts Neck, NJ(Zone 7a)

Today I noticed a weird flower head on my Ayesha, it looks nothing like the others. Here is a picture of it along with regular Ayesha blooms. The two flowers shown here definitely originate from the same stem. I know that Ayesha originated as a sport of "Joseph Banks", is it possible that this branch has reverted to that?

SO interesting. Can't wait to hear what the experts say!

Pirl, I did some more searching and came up with a link to Michael Dirr's "Hydrangeas for American Gardens." He writes that he also has observed reversion shoots from Ayesha that have thin sepals like mine.

Anyway I am patiently waiting for the oddball to mature, I am curious about the eventual color.

I'll go out and check mine. If I spot anything unusual I'll report back.

I haven't noticed anything like that, but my Ayesha is still pretty young. I'll definitely keep an eye out and report back on this thread if I observe anything like that.

Your blossoms are so big - I can hardly wait until mine are bigger.

Mine are normal. I love the heads!
