Hi, snooch. Happy you're posting here on DG. It's a lot of fun!

Well, here's an idea: if you don't mind year old seeds, lots of places like hardware stores are having close-outs for half price, etc. right now. I just bought a lot of flower seeds for half off at Smith & Hawkins, too.

Lots of DGers buy their general garden variety seeds from Onalee's, Select Seeds, Diane's Seeds, Johnny's, and Stokes:

Also, Livingston's Seeds (wholesale) is in Columbus and if you call them they might let you come in to the office to shop at discount:

One other place you may already know about is Bluestone Perennials http://www.bluestoneperennials.com/b/bp/index.html located east of Cleveland. They have loads of small perennial plants for mail order sale, and you may want to keep an eye on their website for specials and sales.

And then if you go to the Seed Trading forum here on DG many people will trade for a SSAE~~Stamped Self-Addressed Envelope (or some people want bubble envelopes) and they don't really want anything in return. Or go to your favorite plant forums and many DGers make offers to posters just for fun.

Also, I think the Wintersowers give away lots of seeds just for fun.

We look forward to seeing photos of your garden as it progresses! t.

I think your red buckeye will be fun. It's a real hummingbird attractant for early spring. You are lucky to get up to Bluestone. I understand they have a marvelous end of season sale that a number of DGers attend. I think Bluestone has an e-mail list for notice of events, too.

How do I keep up with the weeds??! Good question! I wish I had a clue! This year with all the rain we've had zillions! I invested in several large containers of Preen, a 'pre-emergent' for weeds and gave the garden 3 doses of it at 3-4 week intervals. Finally I think we got the weeds under control a bit. Of course, we had to spend a few days weeding too (but I have college age kids who I send out to do much of that!). I really try to limit the chemicals in the garden, so I am careful with the applications.

If you use Preen in your garden, though, you can't direct sow vegetable or flower seeds or expect much natural 'reseeding' of the plants in your garden. The idea for Preen is that the chemicals in it keep (weed) seeds from germinating, and most of your flower seeds won't germinate, too. You can plant small seedlings (like the ones from Bluestone) though. They are not affected.

Good luck. t.

Thanks for letting me know about the preen.I have been wanting to try that for a while now.nice to know it works.Dont know if i will do it this year but next spring for sure. The red buckeye tree will be nice when it grows up.We fill up 2 humming bird feeders a day with nector and go through a jar of jelly a week for the orioles. We have a busy yard for sure.sheila
