A friend of mine is in Alabama is in a panic and says she has Japanese Hornets in her barn. I was looking for information as to whether they have made it into the US yet. Does anyone have any knowledge about that?

Japanese (Asian) Hornets
I have a feeling she just has regular hornets (or potentially some other sort of stinging insect...often you don't want to get close enough to them to be able to make a really good ID!) When you have stinging insects (or spiders, or other scary critters) they can tend to make you a little nervous and in the process appear larger than they actually are. She may also just have the name wrong, a little googling turned up a few pages that talked about a European hornet that does exist here that people mistakenly refer to as Japanese hornet, so it could be that's what she has and she has the wrong name for them. I don't think she has the hornet that's in your Wikipedia link.
