Beautiful Flowers of the Wasatch

Farmingdale, ME(Zone 5a)

I came across an article that included many beautiful photos of the lush mountains of the Wasatch in Utah, and I thought many of you would also enjoy. The plentiful rains this year produced a bumper crop of wildflowers.
Enjoy.

Maybe it's Mertensia virginica? Not sure....

It's a Mertensia, but not Mertensia virgincia. There are a few dozen different species of Mertensia that occur in the American West, primarily in alpine or subalpine meadows.

Not comfrey, the leaves are glabrous (not hairy). Virginia bluebells are an eastern North American species; it's doubtful your pic could be that. In addition, the shape of the bells are indicative of the western types, or M. paniculata. However, the leaves don't seem to match those of M. paniculata.

My guess would be Mertensia ciliata but, as I said before, there are several species of Mertensia in the West. Plus, there is quite a lot of variation between different populations of each species. So much so that there isn't even any real agreement amonst experts as to how many species there are.
