Do Macs have the same trouble with spyware and virus as PCs?

I am an old Mac user, from about 15 years ago. I switched to PCs because I couldn't afford a MAC.
Now my sister is looking to get a new laptop and I was wondering if the
modern MAC has the same trouble with all of the spyware and virus as the PC.
