Trillium Seed pods

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

I posted this on another forum, but thought perhaps someone here might be able to help. I have been monitoring two, large, trillum seed pods but I don't know when to harvest them.

Any advice, experience, suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Lauri,

I usually wait until seedpods have turned brown. Or until they pop open. That's the moment the plant is ready to shed them. They should be at their best by then.

If you're afraid of birds (or anything else) to eat the pods or seeds, you kan cover them with a paper baggy.

thank you Tuinkabouter - that is very helpful. Mine are very large, but don't seem to be expanding further - they are a deep marron-y brown. I'm thinking of going ahead and trying one of them this weekend.

Edited to add that I also found this link which I thought useful http://www.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/Profile.aspx?pid=341

And one more, which gives some excellent advice for removing the seeds from the capsule pulp - (you need to scroll down to the last article on the page) http://www.srgc.org.uk/bulblog/log2008/200808/log.html

I think this will get me on my way - then it is waiting double dormancy, two years for true leaves, and two or three years until blossom. This is going to take true gardening patience!

I always leave the pulp of fruits to ferment: put it in water and leave it there until a fungus develops. You can then wash it off the seeds pretty easily.

Thank you - I've heard of doing this with tomato seed.
