I need a book which will help me identify the shrubs I find in the Adirondack mountains (upstate New York). Can you make a suggestion?
Shrub Identification
I have a couple books that I've owned for better than twenty years. You could do worse than to pick these up.
•Woody Plants in Winter, Core and Ammons, 1958 (The Boxwood Press)
•How to Identify Plants, Harrington and Durrell, 1957 (Swallow Press)
These are both black and white paperback books with line drawings and text. This is the best way to learn terminology, dichotomous keys, etc. and not be wowed by color pictures which are typically images of cultivated and open-grown plants and rarely provide the character and details for IDing wild plants.
Additionally, I'd look around for texts written by and/or related solely to your state or region. If you haven't posted this request on the Northeast Gardening forum, you should since those folks may already have what you are seeking.
Good luck with your quest - one could be IDing plants in much blander places.
