lesions on Elderberry Bush

Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

For the past two summers in mid-July, our elderberry bush develops these lesions on the leaves which eventually kill them. We bought the bushes in 2007.

Can anyone identify them and advise us what to do?

Post a picture of the whole plant, showing the growing situation/condtions. Elderberry can be afflicted with a host of common problems (like borers, cankers, leaf spot, and powdery mildew). Many times these are passing problems, but without seeing more it would be hard to offer very firm advice.

The two bushes are next to each other in a sunny spot in sandy, loam soil.

Here is the 2nd bush.

Both elderberry were planted next to each other at the same time, but one has grown quite a bit more than the other. They get a lot of sun and the soil is sandy - loam. They get water from the sprinkler system which this year has been off because we've had so much rain. The lesions have been a problem the past two summers.

Can anyone recommend any treatment?
