This has me alarmed. Small branches in the center of the tree are dying. The wood is gray and dry. This tree has been the focal point of my back yard for seven years and I love it. It's been healthy and beautiful until now. I'll call a tree surgeon if that's your advice.

Inner branches dying is common since they don't receive sunlight.

yes I lost two big interior limbs of my biggest maple. I'm used to the twiggy death but this had me bothered. My tree guy said it was from being shaded though. Could'nt find anything else wrong with it.
