Hiding Veronica's ugly knees :)

Albany (again), NY(Zone 5b)

Hi there - after many years of high maintenance annuals, I'm realizing the joy of perennials - and have started randomly picking up new stuff and putting it in my chaos center (everything from tulips, lilies, sedum, hostas, digitalis, daylilies, etc.)

Enter Vernonica Speedwell (two tired orphans at Lowes last year) - a lovely lass, long-lasting, but now she isn't attractive near the ground. They've been wonderful - lots of growth, flowers were appreciated during a lull period. I'm now in a position where I am fine-tuning the garden and need to fill in a few gaps.

I'd like some ideas or recommendations for perennial companion plants that would complement veronica July onward without crowding either the veronicas or nearby pretties.

Further complicating the situation - I just bought 15 of them on sale from Bloomingbulb. I can always tuck them in amidst the hostas, but want some other ideas of easy companion plants that perform well later in the year and can hide poor Veronica's knees.
