Tree Bowl?

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

I see these growths on trees in the local woods. I always called them 'bowls' but I don't think that's the right term.
Any ideas?

I was going to stretch the smart aleck angle, and suggest:

One might make bowls from burls on boles of beeches and birches.

But I bit my tongue.
