Sapling bark damage

Portland, OR(Zone 8a)

So, someone who looks a lot like me got careless with the weed-eater thingie and stripped about a three inch section of bark from a three year old 4 foot tall sapling. Otherwise very healthy Golden Rain Tree. What should I do? (Other than curse my, er, I mean HIS stupidity.) :-)

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Is the bark stripped off round the full circumference of the trunk? If yes, it won't live. Get a new tree. And this time, plant it with a metre radius of grass-free ground around it! (that should always be done for all trees).

I don't know much about Golden Rain Trees. Would it be likely to send out a shoot below the injury? If it will you will not be as far behind as a new plant because you will utilise the 3 year old root system.
On another thread someone else had the same problem and I suggested "In Arch Grafting" as a possible solution.

I thought I could link you to the other post but I can't.
It is in this forum down the list a bit and thread is "Burningbush Problem" June 18th. You might like to have a look at those postings.
